They do say never trust a skinny chef. The primary source here is “they”. If the skinny chef can resist his own food then his tasty dishes are clearly not irresistible.

Gotta say I walk past the nearest barber shop to me because the barber there is balding, not a shaved head, just balding naturally. It’s nothing to do with scissor skill but it simply does not sit right. The chap who did cut my hair at the second barber’s was wearing a baseball cap so he could have been bald or like Chewbacca. I dunno.

Years ago there was a pet shop owner of my acquaintance who often had a parakeet on his shoulder to delight the children and, reassuringly, had bird poop on the back of his shirt.

But should the baker look floury? The butcher’s apron – is that blood? Should the bookstore owner wear glasses? It’s really, really not required for the publican to be drunk all the time.

Do traders need to look the part for authenticity? There’s a couple of TV series about restoring cars and servicing engines where the presenter/mechanics look suspiciously clean. Whereas if I just lift the bonnet somehow there’s a black streak on my face even before I’ve given up and closed it again five minutes later. Are those clean mechanics believable? Or is there an army of grease monkeys who did all the work out the back somewhere?

My English teacher did look ever so slightly like those ancient portraits of Shakespeare. And as he came down the school corridors “I knew him by his gait”. We studied Othello.

In my actual experience the local park keeper did have just one arm and, before you ask, NO he did not have anyone to help him. He did it all … by himself.

I went to a pub opening where the celeb cutting the ribbon was Douglas Bader, known as the legless air ace of WW2 – and curiously he was teetotal.

I guess it’s reassuring if the traders/professionals look the part. What if, say, for the top job in the country we had a Prime Minister purportedly in control of the nation but not in control of his hair – oh we had one of those.
